Gull Lake is known for her clean water and lots of it! With over 9,400 acres and a chain of lakes adding another 3,600 acres, there is over 20 square miles of swimming and boating opportunity. Gull Lake’s water clarity is 10 1/2 feet as measured by the Minnesota

Department of Natural Resources You will fall in love with Gull Lake and her almost 40 miles of shoreline. Sand bars await you, as you enjoy a cruise or experience uncrowded tubing and water skiing fun. Gull Lake is a reservoir with the water level controlled by a dam operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This dam allows for a mostly stable water level.

Gull Lake drains into the Gull River. From there the flow continues into the Crow Wing River, then into the Mississippi River. Two designated trout streams flow into the Gull Lake Chain. Stony Brook winds from the north and northwest and passes through Fritz Loven Park before flowing into Upper Gull Lake. Home Brook enters Lake Margaret from the forests and ranch lands to the west.
Before Gull Lake resorts brought people to her shores, steam powered boats were used to float rafts of logs from railroad landing near Bar Harbor to the Dam on the Gull River. Along the way many of these logs sank, and can still be found on the bottom of the lake today. Once the logs made it to the dam, the dam was blown using explosives and the logs headed down stream on the rush of water, to be sawn into lumber at the sawmills in Crow Wing or Brainerd. The light gauge railroads extended into the timber country of the Foothills State Forest to the northwest of here.
