        Gull Lake MN Fishing Report
Brainerd MN & Nisswa Minnesota Area ResortsWalleyes are still biting, trolling cranks in low light conditions has been good, but a jig and a leech either drifting or placing under a slip bobber has also been producing many good fish. Bluegills are in the weeds, look for the good cabbage and drop an anchor. Some crappie are being caught on the deep weed edges. Bass have been being caught shallow and deep, under docks, in the weeds, and on the deep weed edge. Keep a line wet,Christopher

        Gull Lake MN Fishing Report
Brainerd MN & Nisswa Minnesota Area ResortsWow! That’s about all I can say about the fishing out here so far this year! Gull has been producing tons of fish of all species. Walleyes have been being caught using some traditional and many non traditional ways so far this year. Walleyes are being caught trolling cranks shallow in low light conditions as well as catching them right in the cabbage during the day using a jig and a leech. The crawler bite in the cabbage will pick up here soon. Using a crawler harness or slow death rig run through the cabbage and pick out the active fish. Lots of big fish and tons of eaters are being caught. Crappies are on the deep weed edges, pike are being found on the weed edges as well as in the weeds, 7-15′ has been a good depth to start. Bass are prevalent eating just about every presentation out there. Again they are in the weeds. The bite has been outstanding this year and you owe it to yourself to get out there and enjoy it!Keep a line wet,Christopher

Brainerd MN & Nisswa Minnesota Area ResortsWell opener has come and gone. It was a little slower with the cold front that came through. The crappies are still shallow and a feeding great crappie minnow under a slip bobber has been producing. A few big bluegills have been mixed in as well. Bass a still shallow and pile have been caught trolling shallow with cranks, spinner baits and jigging plastics. Fishing should get hot here in the near future as summer gets in full swing and the water temp warms.Keep a line wet,Christopher

Fishing has been absolutely great this year, lots of big fish in all varieties; walleye, perch, bluegills, and pike. Walleyes have been being caught all day trolling crank baits (sr-5& ssr-5) in browns, blues, and perch colors. Look for the fish to be hanging in 8-10 feet, they have been in the weeds, so stay right over the top and you will find fish. Pike are hanging in the thick weeds and on the outside edge, 6-15 feet of water. Bluegills are hanging in the cabbages in 8-10 feet using a jig and a twister tail or tip your jig with a crawler and you will get bit. There have been big perch mixed in with the bluegills as well. Now is a great time to get on the water.

Hello! The walleye season has been nothing short of great to this point, trolling cranks after dark has been putting countless walleyes in the boat. Trolling break lines in 5-10 feet just about the cabbage has been putting fish in the boat. Natural colors such as perch and and blue minnow have been hot. Some crappies are still being found in the shallows, but will soon be transitioning into the summer spots. Cast a crappie minnow on a small jig with a slip bobber. Bluegills are sitting in the weeds small jig with a piece of crawler is an excellent choice. Look for good weeds and start fishing. Tons of pike in the cabbage during the day cast or troll crank baits or spoons. Also casting top-water baits are going to be a good choice. Good luck on the water!Get your line wet!

The summer is in full swing, now is the time to get out and enjoy some quality time on the water! The walleye bite remains good using crawlers and leeches on lindy rigs with longer snells (6 foot) or pulling spinners. Look for the fish in 18-30 feet. The blue gill bite is going strong in the cabbage, 6-10 feet of water using small jigs with a piece of crawler. Northern Pike are being pulled from the deep weed edges, trolling or casting spinner baits and husky jerk rapalas. Bass are being caught both deep and shallow, and many being caught off the docks with crawlers. Now is the time to get out and enjoy fishing on Gull!Tight lines,

The open water season has been awesome so far! The walleye fishing has been great! Trolling cranks shallow after dark has been producing, but leeches and crawlers on spinners in the cabbage has been also a deadly tactic. Work the cranks around that 2 mph range and crawlers/leeches around 1 mph. I prefer to strictly go cranks after dark. Sunnies are being found in the cabbage and weed beds, a piece of night crawler on a jig is all that it will take when you get on a school. Pike and bass are starting to show up in the weeds on break lines. The fishing has been fantastic, get out there and enjoy some quality time on the water.Tight lines,

Hello! Sorry it’s been so long since my last report, but the recent storm has been keeping us super busy! On the bright side though, fishing has been great! Walleyes are being caught working the deep weed edges using a leech and a jig or lindy rig, also there has been great success trolling crank baits on the weed edges. Look to work the Cinosam Flats and well as the break between Sandy Point and Rocky Point.
There have been guests catching a good deal of nice sized crappies around the Gull Point area using small jigs. The blue gills continue to keep on biting using a plain hook and a split shot or small jig tipped with a piece of crawler. Look for good cabbage coming to the surface and drop anchor. Pike are hitting spinners being worked through the weeds. Keep a line wet,

Bass are really utilizing the shade of docks right now. Some of the
better developed weed beds are found around Crane Island in Wilson
Bay, The Hayfield & the A-Frame toward the north end of the lake.
For the Pike try trolling the backside of the weedline on the Cinosam
Flats, also the break from Sandy Point to Rocky Point with spinners or
lipless cranks such as rippin’ raps. Another spot to try would be
Dutchman’s Bluff, again working the backside of the weedline either casting or trolling.Have a great trip!

Some up and down weather the past several days has made the fishing rather up and down too. We were scheduled to be on Gull early this morning but after a night of thunder storms and some rain hanging around through the A.M. hours we decided to re-schedule until tomorrow afternoon. On Friday of last week we had a very good day on both Bass and Walleye. The Bass were on the deeper weed edges and seemed to eat either a jig and minnow or a jig and soft plastic bait. The Walleye were in 20 to 24 feet and wanted either a Creek Chub or a Red Tail. Of course along with the Bass and Walleye every once in a while someone would hook a Northern although most of them were a bit “short”. Lots of summer left with many good fishing days to come.Have fun and be safe,

The Memorial Week-end has arrived and from the looks of the traffic so have a good many visitors to the lakes area. The last two days I fished on both Gull Lake and North Long. Yesterday on Gull after a “battle” with trying to find some Walleye that would go we switched over to Crappies and that went well. It looks as if the water is warm enough that they are moving up shallow in preparation for the spawn. As far as the Walleye fishing on Gull it seems that at least for now the best bite is at night pulling cranks in shallow water.Tomorrow our Bass season opens and I suspect that will prove to be quite good with pre-spawn fish moving into the shallow water. This time of year the best place for those bass is back in the lake so they can finish doing their “business”.Good luck fishing and stay safe.

Another fishing opener has come and gone. The weather on Saturday was cooperative and the fish were biting! Finding the warm water was key, even on degree made all the difference. The fish are still holding shallow after the spawn, and trolling crank baits in 6′-8′ of water produced. Perch color Sr-5 shad raps were the ticket. Crappie bite is still hot up by the Bar Harbor bridge. Use a small jig and a crappie minnow under a bobber, fan cast until you catch one and gently put the anchor down. The fishing is going to keep getting better as the water warms! Remember that the bass season is strictly catch and release until May 23rd.Keep a tight line!

gull_lake_walleyes_septWell it’s that time of year again, the water temp is on the decline and with that comes the fish putting on the feed bags. Water temps as of today were right around 61-62 degrees. TGull Lake MN Walleyeshe walleye bite has been picking up each day, and after the weather stabilized the fish have started chowing. I ran out for a quick trip this past evening and ended up putting a few in the box fishing with a Lindy Rig tipped with a shiner. Look for the walleyes on the break lines in 20-26 feet. The crank bait bite is on as well working the back side of the weedlines in about 14′ of water. Look for pike in the weeds. Pulling suckers is a good choice for catching pike this time of year, but they are also shallow in the rushes, toss buzz baits or spinners at them and you get them. Panfish are still right around that 8-9′ range in the weeds, piece of crawler on a jig is still producing.

MN Fishing ResortOnce again we are into full on summer mode, hot sunny days and cooler nights, and the fish have been snapping still! Walleyes are being found in the 18-25 foot range using a lindy rig or a jig tipped with a leech. The break in front of the resort as well as the hayfield has been producing the marble eyes. Sunfish are still going strong and I am consistently seeing baskets full of 8-10 sunfish coming in for the fryer! If you find good cabbage coming to the surface, drop an anchor, toss a piece of worm on a plain hook or jig and you will get into them. Guests have also been catching a few crappies on the back side of the weed lines on waxies while sun fishing. Bass have also been another target and have still been being caught in good numbers, work the north end of the lake as well as working docks, every night when I?m at the lake, someone is always catching them right off the docks!Keep a tight line,

It sure has been nice to be seeing stable weather here again. Walleyes have been biting good these past few weeks, the most productive technique has been running lindy rigs tipped with a leech. Look for these fish in the 14-24 foot range. Work the area on the south side of Gull Point (Squaw Point) as well as the hayfield and the center bar. Pike are being found in the weeds; toss either a spinner bait or a spoon. Blue gills are going strong, look for cabbage in the 8-10 foot range and use either a small jig or a split shot and a hook both tipped with a piece of crawler.Good luck and keep a tight line!

Well the fish are biting! The water temps are fluctuating between 69 and 72 degrees, and with the warm weather in the near forecast it will continue to rise, moving the walleyes finally out of the weed edges and into their normal summer locations of mid-lake humps and deeper on the break lines. As for now, walleyes have been being produced on the north end of the lake near grassy point, the rock pile, and the hayfield. Leeches have been the ticket; crawlers have also been working as well as shiners, look for the fish anywhere from 10-20 feet. Pike are in the weeds and essentially where the walleyes are. Throw spinner baits through the weeds or run cranks on the back side of the weed lines, another tactic would be to toss a sucker minnow on with a bobber and wait for it to go down! Look for pan fish in the cabbage around 6-10 feet split shot and a hook tipped with a worm should do the trick.

The Walleye fishing has made a real strong step forward in the last week. Good numbers of fish are showing up in 14 to 20 feet of water and are generally willing to take either a leech or a minnow on a Lindy Rig. The key seems to be to find fish and then try to stay over them and move slowly. They need to be ?convinced? to bite. The north end of Gull has been the best part of the lake for me. Try the Hay Field and the end of the Grassy Point Bar and if the wind is from the north the north side of Cobin?s bar is well worth a try.
Bass have pretty much done their spawning and are moving a bit deeper. A jig and soft plastic is working well with some nicer fish showing up.
In most lakes the Crappies have moved to deeper but many of the Sunfish are still up shallow and can afford some great fun esp. for the kids.
Have fun fishing and be safe.

Another Minnesota Walleye opener is in the books and now we get real serious. The 2014 Governor’s Opener was hosted this year by the Nisswa area and as one might expect there was all sorts of activity both on and off the lakes. I fished on opening day with Dan Pereira, Ed Boggess and C.B.Bylander from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource. We had a nice day first on Round Lake and then on Gull. The weather was great. The company was great. The cooperation from the Walleye was not so great. We did manage to catch three very nice fish or rather Ed did. What they lacked in numbers they did make up for in size. All three were picture fish and then they went back in the lake. The entire time we were out I saw a total of two other Walleye caught. My thought is that we just need the water to warm up so that the Lake Shiners move up shallow on their spawn. Most everywhere we went the water temps were in the mid 40 degree range and we found no fish up shallow where one might expect them this time of year. I think that while the Walleye are deciding what they’re going to do we might try to hunt up some early season Crappie.
          Good luck and stay safe

It’s another season with a later than average ice out on area lakes but at least it’s out for opener unlike last season. Because it’s actually illegal to “test fish” prior to open season no one is sure just what to expect but my best hunch and a place to start at least is shallow. Many of the Walleye in Gull Lake make their way north in the lake to spawn. Some go through Booming Out Bay and continue on to Upper Gull and some go through Bishop Creek into Round Lake. I would suspect that by opening day most will have spawned and be on their way “home”. That said I would assume that many of them will just be starting to head back to where they started from and will be anxious to eat along the way. Last season we caught a lot of early fish as shallow as 4 feet using 1/8 to 1/4 ounce jigs tipped with Spot Tail Shiners.
I visited today with Sheree at S and W bait and unfortunately the bait situation is not looking great. Fatheads and Golden Shiners along with Leeches should be readily available but it’s not looking good for Spot Tails due to the cold water temps. Still it is the opener and there will be lots of boats on the lakes with lots of expectant fishing people and every now and then someone will catch dinner.
Good luck and stay safe. Remember the water this time of year is extremely cold and probably the best place for your life jacket is ON.

Well the hard water season is in full swing and the fish are biting! Ice conditions are varying from lake to lake and it is important to take proper precautions when hitting the ice. With that said, walleyes have been hitting hard on rattle spoons (I prefer red) tipped with a fat head. They are also hitting shiners on a plain hook. Look for the fish in that 20-25 foot range. Pike are being found anywhere from 8-12 feet of water using a sucker minnow. Running tip ups for pike is always a fun thing while waiting for the evening walleye bite!

It’s really a fun time on many of the areas lakes right now. Walleye, Bass and Northern Pike can all be found just off the deep weed edges and many of them are quite willing to take a Chub or even a Fat Head pulled on a Lindy Rig nice a slow or a small spinner moving a bit faster. The north end of Gull Lake around the Hayfield and Grassy Point are a good place to look as is the south side of the Rock Pile. A number of the smaller lakes in the area are also producing a lot of Bass action with either a jig and minnow or a plastic worm presentation.

Well it seems as if summer waited until now to show up! The fish have still been snapping up the bait with sunfish, bass, and pike being a hot bite. Walleyes are still being caught in the low light hours using lindy rigs and red tails. Work the backside of the weed lines in approximately 16-22 feet. As for sunfish look for the weed beds and toss an anchor, the Hayfield and Cinosam flats have been producing nice size sunfish using a small jig topped with a piece of crawler, look for the fish to be holding in 7-10 feet. Bass have been hitting on crank baits as well as leeches; work Squaw Point, Love Lake and the Gull Narrows for the best results. Pike can be found during the lighter hours of the day, cast weed beds with top waters or spinners, or pick up some sucker minnows and toss them out on a bobber about 2 feet below the surface and wait for the bobber to go down! Work places such as Cinosam Flats, Love Lake, Squaw Point, and Wilson Bay.

Hello again! The fishing has been awesome here on Gull! Many fish of every variety have been being brought in! Walleyes are being caught in the 16-22 foot range using leeches and crawlers on lindy rigs and crawler harnesses respectively. Troll these along the break in front of the resort as well as the bow tie flats. Another fun way to chase late night walleyes is using a lighted slip bobber. Pike have been being caught casting dare devils and top waters and this is the time of year to start catching the big boys, warm water temps have made the gators to become very active, work weed beds and other areas such as the rock pile, Grassy Point, and the break off Gull Point (Squaw Point), ask me about an awesome spinner set up I run with a sucker that has proven deadly. Trolling cranks along weed edges is another way to get these toothy critters. Crappies are there you just have to be willing to look for them, saw a group that got into them on the west side of the Bowtie and they got some nice ones. I went out to check a few blue gill spots and got into some nice 9 inch range gills, use a crawler and a 1/2 oz long gumball jig tipped with a chunk of a crawler, and drop it till it hit the bottom start reeling in and get ready to set the hook. The lake is very clear and weed beds are abundant, find weeds in about 7-9 feet and toss an anchor, wait 5-10 min and if you aren’t on them move even 20 feet and you will eventually get on them, the Hayfield has been holding nice fish as well as Cinosam flats. Ask me about where to go and I’ll mark you a map and get you on some fish.

          MN Fishing Resort

The daytime Walleye bite has for the most part definitely moved to somewhat deeper water. The best action seems to be on a Lindy Rig and Chub in 14 to 20 feet of water and up to 25 feet on some of the area lakes. Early morning hours and just before sunset seem to be the best. The mid day action is slow esp. with the clear skies and minimal wind that we have experienced over the last several days.
Bass action is very good with lots of good fish now moved off the beds and hanging in the 6 to 10 foot range. The key seems to be finding enough weed growth to give them cover. A jig and plastic worm combination is working well esp. with a very slow presentation.

Summer has arrived, the lakes have warmed up considerably and the fish have responded.
The Crappies and Sunfish are up shallow getting ready to spawn and are providing lots of fun esp. for the younger fishing people. The south end of Gull has a lot of Crappies hanging around the docks and up in the reeds. The Sunfish are in more or less the same areas but seem to just be starting their spawn.
Bass fishing is quite good too although they are rather scattered still. Some of the Bass are up shallow spawning while quite a few are still holding in 8 to 12 feet of water chasing shiners which are now spawning heavily.
The Walleye bite is much improved and like the Bass they are up shallow chasing spawning shiners. The best approach seems to be going light with a 1/8 ounce jig and a Spot Tail Shiner. Don?t be afraid to look as shallow as 6 or 7 feet. We have had good luck sitting in 10 to 12 feet of water and pitching the jig up shallow.

The water temps have started to rise as the weather has been cooperating with us. The fish are finally starting to move into their normal summer spots. I have been finding success trolling shad raps on the break in front of Gull 4 Seasons Resort using a perch color around sunset. Other spots producing walleyes are the Hayfield using a lindy rig and a shiner, and also working the Rock Pile with the same approach. Bluegills are being caught on crappie minnows or a crawler. Bass have been all over, a personal favorite lure to throw at them is a perch colored husky jerk but a leech and a bobber will also produce. Fishing is only going to get better, so grab your rods and hit the water!

Well the water temps have started rising and the walleyes are finishing up with their spawn. With the cold spring the walleye fishing is only going to get better in the weeks to come. The Gull Narrows have been producing good numbers of walleye along with crappies. Try a jig topped with a spot tail as well as trolling or casting crank baits. Look for the walleyes to start moving to their normal summer spots now and a favorite way of mine to target them is pull SR-5 deep runner Shad Raps on the break in front of the resort in 7-8.5 feet. Crappies are being caught using a rig as simple as a bobber and a crappie minnow. Place the hook 2.5 feet below the bobber and get ready to set the hook. Bass have been hitting hard in the narrows as well as in Love Lake. The fishing is going to get better as the water temp continues to rise, so grab you rod and bait and get on the lake!

This has been a very “interesting” spring in the Nisswa area. On opening week-end of the Walleye season many of our lakes were still ice covered and a good number of fishing people simply changed their plans and stayed home. I would guess that a record of some sort was set for folks celebrating mother’s day rather than chasing fish.
The good news is that the ice is gone and the water temps. are coming up. A lot of attention so far has been focused not on the Walleye bite but on chasing Crappies and Sunfish. Even this plan has met with spotty success. Some of the typical early spring areas have some good numbers of fish and others seem to still have water that is too cold for much action. Those who have been out looking for Walleyes are having very spotty success, esp. during day light hours. The fish that are being found are generally very shallow.
The local bait shops are just now starting to get a better supply of Spot Tail Shiners and Leeches from the trappers who have had to work around the unusually late spring like everyone else.
I would say that it’s starting and the best is certainly yet to come.

The Walleye fishing on most area lakes has gotten to be quite a challenge. The few day-time fish that are being caught are coming primarily on a Lindy Rig and Minnow presentation with a few fish still taking Leeches. Some fishing people are still doing fairly well pulling crank baits during the night time hours. The expectation is that as the water cools down later in the season the Walleye fishing will pick up considerably. Right now the surface temps in most of our lakes have climbed into the lower 80 degree range.
Bass and Northern Pike fishing continues strong in most of the area. Look for numbers of these fish on the outer edges of the deeper weed lines. A jig and minnow combination is working very well. For those of you who dont believe Bass fishing with live bait is the sporting way to go many fish are still willing to take a soft plastic bait. The key seems to be a very slow presentation.
A week ago I fished on Gull with some folks that wanted to look for Sunfish. We ended up doing very well once we figured out where they were. We actually caught our fish on a Lindy Rig and Leech back trolling very slowly in 16 to 18 feet of water. It was a nice break from fishing other species and we did catch a good number of very respectable fish.

With the water levels in area lakes getting back to near normal it seems that the fishing is responding in a positive way. The day time Walleye bite is still a hit and miss sort of proposition but well worth the effort. Most of the willing fish still seem to be relatively shallow ranging in the 12 to 20 foot range. If you can find them Red Tail Chubs are the bait of choice but due to the high water in many of the streams the trappers are having trouble getting to them. Leeches are plentiful and are a good second choice.
The Bass bight has been very good and they are very willing to take artificial baits. A slower moving bait seems to be working the best in 8 to 12 feet of water. Northern action is also starting to pick up along the deeper weed edges.

Walleyes have been stacking up where the water has been flowing into Gull Lake from Round Lake through Bishops Creek. There is a lot of water that is entering Gull Lake through Bishops Creek due to all the rain, and it is warmer thus drawing the fish. Warmer water is also coming in through the chain from the north and west, fish the areas on the northwest side of Booming Out Bay. After a fantastic Walleye opener and an above average first couple of weeks of the season the bite has slowed down considerably on most area lakes at least during the daylight hours. Fish that are being caught are generally being taken on a Lindy Rig and minnow or with a rig and leech. The fish seem to be in that in between time that is common as they move from spring to summer patterns. Everyone is hoping that the transition wont take long and well be back to the way it should be soon. In the mean time its called go and give it your best.
The Bass bite is very good. A jig and soft plastic seems to be the best bet. Fish slow in 8 to 12 feet of water in the outer weed edges and things should go very well. A few fish are still up shallow and seem to still be trying to spawn. Once again its a great time of year to play catch and release with most of the Bass especially those bigger females.

The Walleye opener in the Brainerd Lakes area was quite typical. Some anglers did very well and others struggled. The opening is always interesting in that lots of fishing people are making lots of guesses as to where to fish, how deep and what the best bait will be. The one thing everyone could agree on was that the weather was much better than many recent opening week-ends. Most of the best reports from the Gull Lake Chain seem to show fish in relatively shallow water( 12 to 18 feet) and lots of anglers pulling Spot Tail Shiners with a Lindy Rig. This should continue to be a good approach for as long as Shiners are available and are strong and healthy. As they weaken from their spawning process they general become far less effective.
Enjoy a great weekend on Gull lake!
Its also a good time to target Crappies and Sunfish. When the weather is stable and warm they continue to be found in shallow water and quite willing to bite. This coming Saturday will also be the beginning of the Bass season so another opportunity will begin. It appears that a good number of Bass are in the same shallow areas that the Crappie are in.

          Gull Lake Ice Out Report

Gull Lake Ice is almost Out
On March 24th the ice went out on most of Gull Lake. This morning there is still a big piece floating in Hole-in the-day Bay, and a smaller piece in front of Squaw Point. The ice didnt do much all day, but about 6:00 pm the wind picked up out of the north. It was quite interesting to watch the speed that the ice was moving as it headed south. The ice piled up on Rocky Point, Holmans Point, and in front of Love Lake. This will be the earliest recorded Ice Out on Gull Lake with the previous earliest date being April 2, 2000..
As far as I can tell the Ice went out on Thursday on North Long Lake. Round Lake still has some ice on it. I have never seen these 3 lakes go out so close to the same date.
Early Ice Out should lead to some great fishing this May & June with the warmer water!

Almost time to go fishing report!

The lakes in the Brainerd/Nisswa lakes area are opening at some sort of record pace and looking at the forecast we should be able to be in the boat real soon. I would expect that our spring crappie and sunfish action will be in full swing by mid April unless the weather guy sends us something real strange. We should have a nice long period of time to chase pan fish before the Walleye season begins in early May. I think its time to get the boat out of storage and re-spool some reels.

With light west winds the ice has pushed up on shore slightly. The ice is about 5-6 inches thick. We did receive over an inch of rain last night and that has reduced the buoyancy of the ice to only floating about an inch above the water. There is an area of water that has opened up closer to Squaw Point.

The Walleye certainly seem to have shifted into a fall mode. Fish have been very easy to locate on most of the usual spots anywhere from 14 to 22 feet. The problem is that some still seem to be a bit reluctant to bite. However if you find that to be the case and keep looking its been much easier to find a feeding school. Lindy Rigs and Chubs are the best during the daylight hours. The north end of the lake seems to be going the best esp. on the east half of the lake.
Not too many people are chasing the Bass or Northern Pike now that the Walleye have turned on but if you decide to do so I would suggest looking deeper than what you might normally do. Some of the humps in Wilson Bay are actually holding some very nice Bass in 20 to 24 feet of water.

From sunset on switch to a shad rap and troll the deep edge of the weedline (7-13 feet). The fall bite is on!! The fishing on Gull Lake is great! Walleyes are being caught by day along the edges of the drop-offs in 18-30 feet of water. A redtail chub seems to work best. At dusk switch to a shad rap SR-5 work the top of the drop off just outside the weed line. You dont have to go far from Gull Four Seasons Resort as the Cinosam flats are working well. Lots of Northern Pike coming in as well a favorite spot is always either side of Squaw (Gull) Point. Use anything flashy. The Largemouth Bass are biting also, people fishing off the docks are getting some really nice bass!

It certainly appears that we are moving into the fall fishing pattern. More and more Walleye are starting to show up on most of the area lakes and Gull is no exception. Finding fish in 14 to 20 feet of water is becoming easier on a daily basis. At times they are still a bit reluctant to bite but if a person keeps looking it seems that sooner or later the hungry group will be found. Generally a Lindy Rig and a Chub have been working the best but Leeches are also producing some fish.
If Bass or Northern are what youre after they also continue to be quite cooperative. A jig and minnow fished slowly through the deeper weed edges is still working well. Position the boat in 15 or 16 feet of water, cast up into the weeds and make a slow retrieve and you should find some good action.

The walleye bite has begun! Yesterday I was greeted on the dock by a smiling Glen Belgum of the Nisswa Guides League. He said he has been having good walleye fishing on Gull Lake as of late. Try the edge of the flat in front of the resort (Cinosam Flats) look for the schools in the 20s for depth. A redtail chub is now a great bait.
When fishing on Gull Lake for walleyes:
Check the drop offs and breaks for schools of fish. If the fish are right on the bottom it is tougher to get them to bight. A few feet off the bottom is ideal.
Throw a float where the school is and fish the float.
If the fish wont bite try another spot, you can check the school a little later and they may be biting.
The sunfish bite is still fantastic, use a piece of crawler or a small leech in the cabbage flats.
The Northern Pike bite is best on cloudy days.

Fishing success has been on the up and up recently. Walleyes are being caught using shad rap Sr5s trolling both the drop off in front of the resort and Gull (Squaw) Point. Troll these two areas in depths between 8- 15 feet. Northern Pike are being caught fishing Cinosam flats in about 6 feet using sucker minnows and a bobber, they are also being caught on the south side of Gull Point trolling Sr5s, throwing HJ14s, or just throwing a large sucker minnow and waiting for the big one to attack. Sunfish have been plentiful and in large sizes, fish Cinosam Flats and the Hayfield using a split shot and hook topped with a piece of crawler . Fish these two spots by putting yourself in about 4-6 feet of water and once you see weeds at the surface pitch an anchor and start fishing!

The Walleye bite on area lakes is quite typical for this time of year. The very warm water and an abundance of baitfish for the Walleye to feed on have slowed the action and success has been a day to day challenge for Walleye anglers. This last week I had a very good morning on Gull Lake on Monday and went right back on Tuesday morning only to have a tough time until we switched over to Bass fishing to give the two young boys in the boat some action. Thankfully the Bass were in a cooperative mood as they generally are this time of year.

A beautiful week of weather is being topped by some very good fishing! A few walleyes are being caught, but the sunfish bite is fantastic. Small leeches and pieces of night crawlers are providing baskets of sunfish. Try 8-12 feet near the deeper edge of the cabbage flats. Great eating and lots of fun to catch.
Most of the area lakes are producing a good number of Bass and a few Pike mixed in with them. If action is what youre after this is probably your best bet. I would suspect that sometime later in August or early September we will see a major change in the Walleye action as the water cools and some of the forage base gets eaten up.

          MN Fishing Resort

The fishing on Gull and other area lakes continues to be very good. Walleye on Gull are now into much more of a normal summer pattern esp. early in the morning and then again late in the afternoon. A slow approach with a Lindy Rig and a Chub or a Leech seems to be drawing the most attention. The fish are still relatively shallow for the most part. Depths from 14 to 18 feet have consistently been the most dependable. The only negative with these shallow fish is that they tend to be a little spooky. If youre on fish and they seem to disappear, try another spot and return to where you have been finding fish after they have had a chance to calm down and regroup.
Bass action has also picked up considerably in the past week. Many of the Bass have moved from the shallow spawning areas and are now on the edges of the deeper drops, often in 8 to 12 feet of water. As often is the case pitching up into the weed line with a slow retrieve of a jig and soft plastic bait is a very good approach.
Northern Pike action is starting to pick up also with the appearance of the new seasons aquatic growth in the lake. A jig and minnow is a great approach for those looking for Pike.

The Walleye action on most of the area lakes is starting to pick up along with the more steady weather. Most of the day time action is from 14 to 20 feet using a Lindy Rig and a Red Tail Chub. Most of the bait shops still have Spot Tail Shiners available but they are not a hardy as the ones we were getting earlier in the season.
Crappies in most lakes have just started the spawning process. They are generally in water ranging from 2 to 6 feet in depth to spawn and are quite willing to take a small jig tipped with a Crappie minnow. If you go after them and are successful remember they are very vulnerable when spawning and numbers of fish that are kept should be reasonable. Leave a few to spawn for the future.
Bass season is now open also but the cool water has them a bit sluggish. Jigs and soft plastic has been working well but a slow presentation seems to really be the key.

The Largemouth Bass are actively taking everything put in front of them from a leech to a minnow to a spinner. Try the soft bottom shallow areas in 3 to 5 feet. A few crappies have come in but the bite has not really started. The walleyes do bite when the weather cooperates; try the Hayfield or the Grassy Point Dutchmans Bluff area. There is a lot of water flowing into Gull Lake from the chain. The walleyes can be had near the Bar Harbor Bridge after dark. Gull Lake Minnesota Fishing opener forecast. Tips and spots to try!

With just a week remaining until the Walleye opener the big questions as always are where will they be and what will they be biting on. The where becomes even a bit more interesting with the late spring weve had and the cold water temps. Although days like today will start to warm things up. I would suspect that many of the fish will be relatively shallow at least early and late in the day. As the day goes on and esp. if its a clear day the fish will drop somewhat deeper toward mid day. A Lindy Rig with either a spot tail shiner or a leech would be a good starting point. Start in 10 or 12 feet of water and if they cant be found move deeper. On Gull the north end of the lake will most likely be where most of the post spawn fish are hanging around. Cobins Bar, Grassy Point and the Hay Field are all good places to check. If Gull is tough a trip through Bishops Creek into Round Lake is always something to consider. Its a slow trip through shallow water but just may pay off..

As of Sunday December 26, 2010 we drilled a hole about 200 feet from shore in front of Gull 4 Seasons Resort. The ice measured 9 inches thick. On the edge of the Cinosam Flat in front of the resort the ice was 12 inches thick. In front of the county road 115 boat launch (site of the Brainerd Jaycees $100,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza) the ice was 14 inches thick about 50 feet from shore, 1/4 mile from shore, and about 1/2 mile from shore heading west. There is about 6 inches of snow on Gull Lake in these areas. About 1″ of water came on the ice overnight in these spots. As always use caution when you do any and everything, including venturing onto the ice.

After listening to stories of people catching fish, and people not catching fish, Gina (my daughter) and I decided to see what we could catch. We went out to the edge of the Cinosam Flat in front of the resort last night. We put down a “gold” and a “perch” Shad Rap SR-5s, and trolled in 5-8 feet of water (right on top of the flat). We fished for an hour and a half and between 6:45 and 8:15pm and caught 10 walleyes. Our best depth was 6 feet.

The walleye bite on Gull Lake continues to be very hot! Christopher, Scott, Gina & Aaron collected their summer bonus in the form of a guided fishing trip with Lenny Hodgson of the Nisswa Guides League. They had to do some hunting around but did find some fish willing to cooperate in the 18 to 20 foot depth. Redtail Chubs on a lindy rig was the right bait. Find the fish, work the school and if they wont bite, move on. You will eventually find that hungry school of walleyes for some great fall fishing.

The last few days have certainly begun to feel like fall is on the way, and the fish are acting as if that were true. The Walleye action has picked up considerably on many area lakes and the size also seems to be improving. Gull Lake has been very good with good numbers of fish still showing up fairly shallow. A Lindy Rig with a Chub seems to be drawing the most attention in 14 to 18 feet of water on most spots with a few deeper fish on the south end of the lake.
Largemouth Bass and Northern fishing continues strong with the Bass moving deeper on many lakes. A jig and minnow is producing the best with a slow retrieve. Under the right conditions (calm water) a deep diving crank bait will also produce.
Over all I would suspect the fishing, esp. the Walleye action, will just get better and better as the water cools down. Fall also seems to be the time of year when that 30 plus inch fish will show up and give a person a great opportunity for a fine picture.
Good luck and stay safe. As the water cools down that life jacket becomes even more important.

The weather has been hot, and the fishing has been very good. I am happy to say that our resorts guests have been having fantastic luck catching sunfish. The best bet has been using a piece of night crawler in Love Lake, the weed bed just south of the Cinosam Flats has been great also. Trolling over the cabbage has been productive for the Northern Pike. The flat north of Squaw Point has been a favorite spot. The Walleyes continue to come in leading to lots of smiles and lots of great fish dinners! The Largemouth Bass fishing has been good also.
It is a great time to be on the water!

With the heat, bright skies and generally minimal wind the Walleye bite has slowed. A few fish are still being taken during the day on the deep weed edges in 14 to 18 feet of water pulling a Lindy Rig and a Chub. The main part of Gull has been the best. The fish are actually easy to see with a flasher or graph but getting them to bite is not such an easy task.
Bass fishing continues to be quite good on many area lakes. A lot of the Bass have moved even closer to the deeper edges are generally being caught in 10 to 14 feet of water with some even deeper. A very slow presentation with a jig and minnow or a jig and soft plastic continue to work well.
Northern Pike are showing up in 20 to 30 feet of water which is actually out from the weed edges and are being caught on Lindy Rigs tied with braided line to avoid being cut off and using a 1/2 ounce sinker and large Chub or Sucker Minnow.

What a great week of fishing on Gull Lake for our report!

The walleye bite was hot. Anglers who got up with the sun and trolled with a shad rap in 12-20 feet of water found some nice walleyes along the Cinosam Flats as well as the Bow Tie Bar. Walleyes were also being caught using Lindy Rigs and redtailed chubs in 15-18 feet along the edge of the Cinosam Flats. This method seemed most productive in the morning. The sunfish bite was strong using small leeches or a piece of night crawler in the deeper cabbage flats fishing in 8-12 feet of water. Gull Lake is holding lots of nice fish and the baitfish population doesnt seem as large as it was last year. Looks like a great fall for fishing is fast aproaching!!!

The walleye fishing has been looking up in our Beautiful Brainerd Lakes Area with each passing day! Over the past week the Gull Lake catch has been increasing from a few fish a day to catching 6-7 keepers each outing. The weapon of choice at this point is Shad Raps (SR-5), trolling on the edge of the weed line in about 12 feet or so of water. Another effective way to go after them is using a Lindy Rig with a spinner and a leech or crawler. The fish have been found mainly on the Cinosam Flats and the Rock Pile. The big sun fish are being found on the Hay Field in about 8 feet of water. Just look for the weeds to come to the surface and drop an anchor. Use a hook and sinker set up topped with a crappie minnow or a piece of a crawler to catch these. Norhtern Pike are being caught on the weed line (8-12) on the Cinosam Flats as well as trolling around Squaw Point, Shad raps and sucker minnows have been effective.

Walleye fishing has moved into more of a mid-summer pattern on Gull Lake. The days which provide some walleye “chop” and a bit of cloud cover have been the best by far. There are some fish to be found along the deep weed edges which on most lakes means from 14 to 16 feet of water. There also is another group of walleye which have moved to deeper water. Most fish that are being taken are coming on a Lindy Rig and Chub combination. Some fish are also being taken after dark pulling crank baits.
Bass fishing has been very good on almost all of the Brainerd Area lakes and some very nice Northern Pike are also showing up. The bass are still responding well to a jig tipped with a soft plastic bait. Many of the Bass are a bit deeper, generally in the 8 to 12 foot range.

Bluegill, Pumpkinseed & Green Sunfish Are Biting!

Bluegill, Pumpkinseed & Green Sunfish Are Biting!
The panfish and bass fishing has been phenomenal as of recent, with nice sunfish being found around the Cinosam Flats, the hay field, and Love Lake. The big sunnies have been being caught on crappie minnows as well as night crawlers and pan fish leeches. Look for weeds over the side of the boat in 6-12 feet, and when you see a large amount of weeds near the surface, pitch an anchor over the side and get ready for some major action! As for Northern Pike, they are still being caught trolling around Squaw Point (Gull Point), as well as the Cinosam Flats, I would suggest an SR-5 Shad Rap trolling in 6-10 feet on the edge of the weed line.
          Good Luck!

Walleye action has slowed considerably on most of the area lakes which is typical for this time of year. A few fish are still being caught on the deep weed edges with Lindy Rig and minnow or leech combinations. A good number of Bass are also occupying the same areas so there is plenty of action but not always the Walleye you may be looking for.
Bass fishing is very good especially on somewhat calmer days when throwing a jig and plastic worm or a jig and minnow into the deeper weeds can be done. In fishing this technique it’s likely that a Northern Pike will also show up.

With the warm weather the panfish action has gotten hot as well! Families have been having a blast catching sunfish (about 1 in 3 is very large) in Love Lake. A few fishing guests have been treated to some great crappie action in Wilson Bay of Gull Lake (see our crappie hot spots) using a mister twister. As the cabbage beds fill in the sunfish should move out to the 8-12 foot weed line. A Minnesota Vacation and sunfish, you cant beat that!

          The Bite Is On !

The slow start to the Walleye season seems to have turned the corner. Fish are showing up in more and more of the regular spots and the good news is that they are hungry. A Lindy Rig with a chub seems to be the best bet but leeches are also a good choice. On Gull Lake the majority of the fish are in 14 to 20 feet of water with the somewhat deeper fish tending to be a bit larger.
Bass are also doing very well on several of the area lakes. A mushroom jig with a plastic worm such as a Berkley Power Worm is a good choice. Most of the fish that I’ve been finding are anywhere in the 6 to 12 foot range. Don’t be afraid to use a very slow presentation.

The wind and rain didn’t stop these Jackson Minnesota fishermen. The Largemouth Bass Hot Spots took them right to the fish! They cast frogs over the lily pads in Love Lake, and had a great afternoon of fishing.
p.s. We trolled for walleyes for a couple of hours around sunset last night. We caught 5 walleyes.

Fishing action in the Brainerd Lakes Resort Area remains very good. The Gull Lake Hot Spots continue to put out the fish. The Largemouth Bass have been biting like crazy, and seem to be taking everything from leaches to crawlers, and spinners to frogs. The sizes have been pretty good as well, with many being caught between 2 and 3 pounds. Sunfish have been hitting hard as well on crawlers. Crappies are still biting fairly well up in the Gull Narrows by the Zorbas Bridge, They are being caught using a bobber and a crappie minnow. Walleyes have still been being consistently caught on the Cinosam flats using shiners and Lindy Rigs and also Shad Raps, look for the walleyes to start moving out deeper as the water temperature rises, but for right now with a cloudy week everything is staying fairly shallow.

As of Saturday we have added Bass to the list of open seasons. I was out with a group this morning and the action was pretty much non-stop. Many of the fish were smaller males but we had a number of nicer fish also. The main goal was to keep one of the group members who was very new to fishing interested and with lots of cooperation from the fish that was not a problem.
Walleye fishing is starting to come around more and more each day. The relatively slow start to the Walleye bite is still a bit of a mystery but they are beginning to show more interest.
The early Crappie bite which was fantastic is slowing some as the fish finish their spawning and disperse to deeper water. Many anglers spent a bit more time chasing Crappies this spring when the Walleye seemed to have a case of “lockjaw”.
With the water temps warming up nicely we seem to be moving quite quickly into more of a summer pattern for most of our fishing. The good news with that is that both Bass and Walleye will start to school up more and more and be found in the usual locations. Right now it seems that a Red Tailed Chub on a Lindy Rig is a good choice for the Walleye and a Mushroom Jig Head with a 7″ Berkley Power Worm will get the attention of the Bass. As is usually the case a slow presentation with the worm is generally the best.

The Memorial Day Weekend tradition of great fishing continues. Our resort was booked and lots of vacationers enjoyed a beautiful weekend in the Brainerd Lakes Area. There were lots of trips to empty the garbage pail in the fish cleaning house! Love Lake was producing Largemouth Bass & Sunfish in the shallows. Leeches and pieces of nightcrawlers were the meal ticket there. Crappies were coming in from Love Lake, and the Bar Harbor area. Gull Lake produced some 20 inch plus walleyes off the Cinosam flats.

Another Minnesota fishing opener has once again come and gone, with beautiful weather and great results! Saturday morning started a bit slow with the walleyes being caught on Lindy Rigs topped with a spot tailed shiner, we found the best spots to be near Rocky Point and Dutchmans Bluff. Saturday evening had a lot of action and some nice size walleyes to go along with it we were trolling Sr-5 Shad Raps in 6-8 feet on the edge of the drop-off in front of Gull Four Seasons Resort, the action really picked up just as the sun was setting. Sunday evening was again another attempt with Shad- Raps, and again as the sun was getting low the walleye action was getting high, the sizes were pretty good with a few small ones scattered in with some nice eaters between 17-19 inches!

      • Gull Lake 2010 Fishing Opener Forecast

        May 1, 2010
        MN Fishing Resort

The Walleye and Northern Pike openers are fast approaching and it appears that lots of folks are more than ready. It should be very interesting finding them with the much earlier than usual spring we’ve enjoyed. I would suspect the Walleyes will likely be a bit deeper than many openers but likely in the mood to feed. In the meantime the Crappie and Bluegill fishing continues to be very good on the warmer days especially when we have moderate winds. On many of the lakes it seems that the Crappie especially have moved from the shallow little bays and channels and have begun to stage near the areas that they will eventually spawn in. A small jig fished below a bobber still seems to be the ticket. Last week a friend and I were out and did very well. We used Crappie minnows, wax worms and also tube jigs and it seemed the fish didn’t have a real huge favorite.
Good luck and remember to be safe.

The Crappie and Sunfish action is really starting to pick up with the warmer temperatures and the warming waters in the shallow bays and channels. The Bar Harbor area on the north end of Gull Lake has been quite good especially in the early morning hours. A small jig fished below a bobber with either a Crappie Minnow or a Waxworm have both been working well. If you’re looking specifically for Crappies the minnow is probably best. If Sunfish are also on your agenda a Waxworm will attract both. Don’t hesitate to go very small with your jig choice.
With the early ice out we’re actually getting a bit of “bonus time” this spring. Often we would still be looking at ice this time of year. As the waters warm I would expect fish to start showing up in more and more areas and the bite to improve also.

The amazing weather continues in the Brainerd Lakes Area of Minnesota! After the strong south winds yesterday the Highway 371 Bay of North Long Lake went out this morning. Round Lake of the Gull Lake Chain has 60% plus of ice cover. There is about 80 feet of water in front of the resort. The ice on Gull Lake moved about 100 feet yesterday piling up somewhat on the north shore. Fishing can’t be too far away now!

All indications are that we’re headed for a super early ice out this year. There are a few hardy anglers that are already fishing from the docks at Bar Harbor and Zorbaz on the Upper Gull channels. This morning however a south wind and some floating ice put the end to the Bar Harbor docks for at least a short time. It won’t be long and we’ll be in the boats chasing the Crappies. What ice we have left in the area is extremely hazardous. It is time to put the ice auger away till next season.

Again the age old question . . . If winter is here can spring be far behind?
For the most part the ice fishing is winding down. We can still expect some good Crappie and Sunfish action right up until the ice is no longer safe to venture out on. Still, most of the locals you visit with are gearing up for spring and open water.
My hope is for an early ice out and several weeks of good early season Crappie action. Last year the south end of Gull was very good, but the bite was quite late. We were still finding Crappie in the shallows right into early June. Of course that took quite a bit of pressure off them due to the fact that many anglers had turned their attention to Walleye fishing.
